This course is a basic overview of tax preparation. Prior tax knowledge is not a requirement to take the course. This 15-chapter book is a basic overview of Form 1040. At the end of each chapter the student will answer chapter review questions and prepare a practice tax return. The student will need to complete all the chapters and the final review questions and each practice tax return with a 70% or better to receive a Certificate of Completion for the course.

This course has been approved by the California Tax Education Council (2080-QE-001), which fulfills the 60-hour qualifying education requirement imposed by the state of California to become a tax preparer. A listing of additional requirements to register as a tax preparer may be obtained by contacting CTEC at P.O. Box 2890, Sacramento, CA, 95812-2890 or 1-877-850-2832 or visiting the web page www.CTEC.org. 

After each chapter the student will complete online review questions and Practice Tax Returns. The Practice Tax Return is in PDF format and includes the necessary forms to complete a tax return by hand prior to answering questions. Returns containing Schedule A are prepared with state income tax withholding on line 5 and the additional state specific taxes such as CASDI. Practice Tax Returns are based on the material covered so far.

In order to fulfill CTEC requirements you will take 3 separate finals. The ethics final will consist of 10 questions directly after Chapter 1. The California Tax Law final will be at the end of all of the chapters and consists of 75 questions and the federal final will be administered right after the California Tax Law and will consists of 215 questions. You must pass all three finals with a 70% or better before your certificate of completion will be available to print.
